Kidneys No Longer for Sale in the Philippines

Heard from last night’s news that selling kidneys to foreigners here in the Philippines will no longer be allowed. Guess this has something to do with a lot of poor people selling their kidney for a few thousands of dolalrs, or in exchange for scholarships for the “sellers’” children.

Selling of kidneys here in the country has already reached an alarming level — tv documentaries have featured scarred people from years back, selling kidneys out of desperation and poverty. I guess for these people, it’s better to lose a kidney than to loose their lives because they got nothing to eat… it’s better to lose a kidney than to loose their future because with the money, they could send their children to school even atleast till highschool… that’s a sad fact, so cant blaim them.

Selling kidneys is really illegal as it is strictly prohibited for payment to be made a precondition for a kidney transplant (DOH administrative Order 2004 series of 2008, or, the Revised National Policy on Living Non-Related Organ Donation and Transplantation). Exporting it is also prohibited, and now, if I understood the news last night correctly, selling kidneys to foreigners is also prohibited.

Donating kidneys, or any other body organ, should be voluntarily “given” so there shouldnt be any money involved. Although for the poor pinoy, who wouldnt want a little money to go with the kidney being “voluntarily given”.

Anyway, here’s hoping that when time comes that these “kidney donors” would be needing one themselves, they would have no hard time getting someone else to donate — even if they wouldnt have the money to spare for it.
